MICHELE UHLFELDER
THE STORY
Uhlfelder's first team, a family of six kids, raised her to not be afraid to JUST PLAY. They raced to the breakfast table, jockeyed for the fastest grocery store line and routinely made up back yard games with high stakes (like who did the dishes.) She was the only girl on her baseball and basketball teams. Playing point guard and pitching in Little League Pony Leagues until age 15 were some of the things Uhlfelder loved as a kid. She rode horses and competed in jumping; she played tournament sanctioned tennis and racquetball, and mixed it up in backyard football. As a 13 year old, she decided to go to baseball camp with friends on her team - only to be told NO because she was a girl. With University support in the early 80's, she was granted access to the camp due to something that The Uhlfelder's had never heard of - Title IX. In 9th grade, when forced to make a decision to either become the first girl to play varsity baseball, or play lacrosse, she decided lacrosse may give her that shot to represent her country and win a gold medal for Team U.S.A one day. Volleyball and basketball were the two other sports Uhlfelder played in high school in addition to attending camps, clinics and lessons in every sport she played. A 'STUDENT OF THE GAME' was born.
A true passion for coaching was nurtured by Uhlfelder's brother who coached her through back yard skill sessions, games and competition in various sports. Boys in the neighborhood one day threw the lacrosse ball around, by which Uhlfelder became instantly intrigued. Then it was off to camp. Pikesville High School's first female All American, followed by the first full scholarship awarded at the University of Maryland in women's lacrosse..."The rest is HISTORY."
A Baltimore native, and recent inductee to the National US Lacrosse Hall of Fame…Uhlfelder has founded travel teams and club programs in the Bay Area and Los Angeles, while pioneering college programs in those cities. She has coached and mentored players of all ages and skill-sets, and has become known for developing and connecting with players at every level: youth, high school, college, and national team.
